Colquitt County Summary

Colquitt County, Georgia is located in the southwestern part of the state, and is part of the Albany metropolitan area. It is bordered by Miller County to the north, Thomas County to the east, Decatur County to the south, and Seminole County to the west. The county seat is Moultrie, and the county has a total area of 545 square miles.

History

Colquitt County was created in 1856 from parts of Decatur, Thomas, and Miller counties. It was named for Walter Terry Colquitt, a U.S. Congressman from Georgia. The county was originally home to the Creek and Seminole Native American tribes, and was later settled by European-American settlers in the early 19th century.
During the Civil War, Colquitt County was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Moultrie Courthouse in 1864. After the war, the county was home to several large plantations, and the economy was largely based on agriculture.
In the early 20th century, the county began to diversify its economy, and the first cotton mill was built in Moultrie in 1912. The county also became a center for timber production, and the first sawmill was built in 1919.
