Camden County Summary

Camden County is located in the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Georgia. It is bordered by Charlton County to the north, Glynn County to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west. The county seat is Woodbine, and the largest city is St. Marys. Camden County is part of the Brunswick, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Camden County was created in 1777 from parts of St. Marys and Glynn counties. It was named for Charles Pratt, 1st Earl of Camden, a British lawyer, judge, and politician who opposed oppressive taxation in the American colonies.
The county was home to many Native American tribes, including the Timucua, Guale, and Mocama. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1600s. The county was the site of several battles during the American Revolution, including the Battle of Sunbury and the Battle of Kings Ferry.
In the 19th century, Camden County was a major center of the timber industry. The county was also home to several large plantations, and the population was largely composed of African Americans.

Geography

Camden County covers an area of 545 square miles. It is located in the southeastern corner of Georgia, bordered by Charlton County to the north, Glynn County to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west. The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern part. The Satilla River runs through the county, and there are several small lakes and ponds.
The climate of Camden County is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 68°F, and the average annual precipitation is 51 inches.

Economy

The economy of Camden County is largely based on tourism, manufacturing, and agriculture. The county is home to several tourist attractions, including the Cumberland Island National Seashore, Crooked River State Park, and the St. Marys Submarine Museum.
Manufacturing is a major industry in the county, with several large companies located in the area. The largest employers are the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base, the Georgia-Pacific paper mill, and the Georgia Power plant.
Agriculture is also an important part of the economy. The county is home to several large farms, and the main crops are corn, soybeans, cotton, and peanuts.

The racial makeup of the county was 75.3% White, 19.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
