Bryan County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 30,233. The county seat is Pembroke. The county was created on February 5, 1793, and named after Jonathan Bryan, an early patriot and politician from the area.

Geography

Bryan County is located in the southeastern part of Georgia, and is bordered by Chatham County to the north, Liberty County to the east, Long County to the south, and Effingham County to the west. The county has a total area of 545 square miles, of which 541 square miles is land and 4.2 square miles (0.8%) is water.
The county is located in the coastal plain region of Georgia, and is mostly flat with some rolling hills. The Canoochee River runs through the county, and there are several small lakes and ponds scattered throughout the area.

As of the 2010 census, there were 30,233 people, 10,845 households, and 8,072 families residing in the county. The population density was 56 people per square mile. There were 11,845 housing units at an average density of 22 per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% White, 28.2% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. 2.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 10,845 households, out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.19.
In the county, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $41,845, and the median income for a family was $48,845. Males had a median income of $35,845 versus $25,845 for females. The per capita income for the county was $18,845. About 10.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
