Brooks County Summary
Brooks County is located in the south-central region of the U.S. state of Georgia. It is part of the Valdosta, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Quitman. As of the 2010 census, the population was 16,243.
History
Brooks County was created in 1858 from portions of Lowndes and Thomas counties. It was named for Preston Brooks, a South Carolina congressman who beat Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner with a cane on the floor of the U.S. Senate in 1856.
Geography
Brooks County is located in the southern part of Georgia, about 100 miles south of Atlanta. It is bordered by Lowndes County to the north, Cook County to the east, Berrien County to the south, and Thomas County to the west. The county has a total area of 441 square miles, of which 439 square miles is land and 2.2 square miles (0.5%) is water.
The county is located in the flatwoods region of Georgia, with the majority of the land being used for agriculture. The Withlacoochee River forms the western border of the county, and the Alapaha River forms the eastern border.
Economy
Agriculture is the main economic activity in Brooks County. The county is home to several large farms, including the largest peanut farm in the state. Other crops grown in the county include cotton, corn, soybeans, and tobacco.
The county also has a thriving timber industry, with several sawmills located in the area. The county is also home to several manufacturing plants, including a paper mill and a poultry processing plant.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 16,243 people, 6,093 households, and 4,521 families living in the county. The population density was 37 people per square mile. There were 6,845 housing units at an average density of 16 per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% White, 28.2% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. 2.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The median income for a household in the county was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $37,945. The per capita income for the county was $15,845. About 19.2% of families and 22.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.7% of those under age 18 and 20.2% of those age 65 or over.
