Versailles Summary
Versailles is a village located in Darke County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,717 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Darke County. The village is located along the Stillwater River, a tributary of the Great Miami River.
History
The area that is now Versailles was first settled in 1817 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was originally known as "Hogtown" due to the large number of hogs that were raised in the area. The name was changed to Versailles in 1819 in honor of the French city of the same name.
The village was incorporated in 1837 and was designated as the county seat of Darke County in 1848. The village was a major stop on the Miami and Erie Canal, which was completed in 1845. The canal was a major transportation route for goods and people in the area.

Versailles is located at 39°56'45" North, 84°37'45" West (39.94583, -84.62917). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

The economy of Versailles is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several manufacturing companies, including Versailles Machine and Tool, Versailles Manufacturing, and Versailles Tool and Die. The village is also home to several agricultural businesses, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a grain elevator.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,717 people, 1,093 households, and 717 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,250.8 people per square mile (868.2/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 983.3 per square mile (380.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,945.
