Wayne County Summary

Wayne County is located in the western part of Tennessee, in the Appalachian region of the United States. It is bordered by Hardin County to the north, Lawrence County to the east, Perry County to the south, and Decatur County to the west. The county seat is Waynesboro, and the largest city is Clifton.

History

Wayne County was established in 1817 from parts of Hardin and Hickman counties. It was named for General Anthony Wayne, a Revolutionary War hero. The county was largely rural and agricultural until the late 19th century, when the railroad came through and the timber industry began to develop. The county was also home to several iron furnaces, which were used to produce iron for the railroad and other industries.
In the early 20th century, the county experienced a period of economic growth, as the timber industry expanded and new industries, such as textiles and furniture, were established. The county also saw an influx of African American workers, who came to work in the timber and furniture industries.
