Stewart County Summary

Stewart County is located in the northwest corner of Tennessee, and is bordered by the states of Kentucky and Missouri. It is part of the Clarksville-Hopkinsville, TN-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Dover, and the population was 13,324 at the 2010 census.

History

Stewart County was established in 1803 from a portion of Montgomery County. It was named for Duncan Stewart, a Revolutionary War soldier and early settler of the area. The county was originally part of the Chickasaw Nation, and was later part of the Jackson Purchase.
The county was the site of several Civil War battles, including the Battle of Dover, which was fought in February 1862. The county was also the site of the Battle of Fort Donelson, which was fought in February 1862.

Geography

Stewart County is located in the northwest corner of Tennessee, and is bordered by the states of Kentucky and Missouri. It is part of the Clarksville-Hopkinsville, TN-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county has a total area of 517 square miles, of which 514 square miles is land and 3 square miles (0.6%) is water.
The county is located in the Highland Rim region of Tennessee, and is characterized by rolling hills and valleys. The Cumberland River forms the northern border of the county, and the Tennessee River forms the western border.

The economy of Stewart County is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The county is home to several large farms, and the main crops grown are corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay.
The county is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a furniture factory, and a plastics plant. The county is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
