History

Roane County was established in 1801 and named for Archibald Roane, the second governor of Tennessee. The county was originally part of the Cherokee Nation, and the area was home to several Native American tribes. The first settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s, and the county was officially established in 1801.
During the Civil War, Roane County was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Kingston in 1863. The county was also home to several Confederate prisons, including the infamous Andersonville Prison.
