Montgomery County Summary

Montgomery County, Tennessee is located in the northwest corner of the state and is part of the Clarksville-Montgomery County Metropolitan Statistical Area. History

Montgomery County was established in 1796 and named for General Richard Montgomery, who was killed in the Revolutionary War. The county was part of the Middle Tennessee region, which was home to many Native American tribes prior to European settlement. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s, and the county was officially organized in 1803.
The county was a major center of the Civil War, with several battles taking place in the area. The Battle of Fort Donelson, which was fought in February 1862, was a major Union victory and resulted in the surrender of the Confederate forces in the area. The Battle of Clarksville, which was fought in December 1862, was a Confederate victory.
