Meigs County Summary

Meigs County is located in the southeastern corner of Tennessee, and is part of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by Hamilton County to the north, Rhea County to the east, McMinn County to the south, and Bradley County to the west. The county seat is Decatur, and the county has a total area of 246 square miles, of which 241 square miles is land and 5 square miles is water. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,753.
Meigs County was established in 1836 from parts of Rhea and Hamilton counties. It was named for Return J. Meigs, Jr., who was the Governor of the Southwest Territory from 1801 to 1803. The county was originally part of the Cherokee Nation, and the area was home to several Native American tribes, including the Cherokee, Chickamauga, and Creek.
The economy of Meigs County is largely based on agriculture, with the main crops being corn, soybeans, and hay. The county also has a strong manufacturing sector, with companies such as Whirlpool, Denso, and Volkswagen having plants in the area. Tourism is also an important part of the economy, with the county being home to several state parks, including the Hiwassee/Ocoee Scenic River State Park, the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, and the Cherokee National Forest.
