History

Hickman County was formed in 1807 from parts of Williamson and Dickson counties. It was named for Edwin Hickman, a soldier in the Revolutionary War. The county was originally part of the Chickasaw Nation, and the first settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s. The county was home to several Native American tribes, including the Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Cherokee.
The county was an important center of the Civil War, with several battles taking place in the area. The Battle of Johnsonville was fought in the county in 1864, and the Battle of Franklin was fought nearby in Williamson County.
