DeKalb County Summary
Dekalb County, Tennessee is located in the middle of the state, in the Cumberland Plateau region. It is bordered by White, Warren, Putnam, and Cannon Counties. The county seat is Smithville, and the population was 18,723 as of the 2010 census.
History
Dekalb County was established in 1837 from parts of White, Warren, and Cannon Counties. It was named after Major General Johann de Kalb, a German-born soldier who served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The county was originally part of the Middle Tennessee region, and was home to the Cherokee and Chickasaw Native American tribes.
In the early 19th century, the county was home to several small settlements, including Liberty, Alexandria, and Smithville. The county was largely agricultural, with cotton and tobacco being the main crops. The county also had several small industries, including sawmills, gristmills, and tanneries.
Geography
Dekalb County is located in the middle of the state, in the Cumberland Plateau region. It is bordered by White, Warren, Putnam, and Cannon Counties. The county has a total area of 517 square miles, of which 514 square miles is land and 3 square miles is water. The county is mostly hilly, with elevations ranging from 800 to 1,400 feet above sea level. The county is drained by the Caney Fork River and its tributaries.

The racial makeup of the county was 95.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
