DeKalb County Summary

History

Dekalb County was established in 1837 from parts of White, Warren, and Cannon Counties. It was named after Major General Johann de Kalb, a German-born soldier who served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The county was originally part of the Middle Tennessee region, and was home to the Cherokee and Chickasaw Native American tribes.
In the early 19th century, the county was home to several small settlements, including Liberty, Alexandria, and Smithville. The county was largely agricultural, with cotton and tobacco being the main crops. The county also had several small industries, including sawmills, gristmills, and tanneries.

Geography

Dekalb County is located in the middle of the state, in the Cumberland Plateau region. It is bordered by White, Warren, Putnam, and Cannon Counties. The county has a total area of 517 square miles, of which 514 square miles is land and 3 square miles is water. The county is mostly hilly, with elevations ranging from 800 to 1,400 feet above sea level. The county is drained by the Caney Fork River and its tributaries.

Dekalb County’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The county’s main agricultural products are corn, soybeans, hay, and tobacco. The county also has several small manufacturing companies, including furniture, textiles, and automotive parts.

As of the 2010 census, there were 18,723 people, 7,541 households, and 5,541 families residing in the county. The population density was 36.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 95.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
The median income for a household in the county was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $43,945. The per capita income for the county was $18,945. About 15.2% of families and 19.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
