Cocke County Summary
Cocke County is located in the eastern part of Tennessee, in the Appalachian Mountains. It is bordered by Jefferson, Sevier, Greene, and Hamblen counties. The county seat is Newport, and the largest city is Cosby. The county was established in 1797 and named after William Cocke, a Revolutionary War veteran and early settler of the area.
Geography
Cocke County covers an area of 517 square miles, with a population of 35,662 as of the 2010 census. The county is located in the Appalachian Mountains, and is home to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The county is mostly mountainous, with elevations ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 feet. The highest point in the county is Mount Cammerer, at 5,039 feet. The county is drained by the French Broad River and its tributaries, the Pigeon River and the Nolichucky River.
The county is home to several state parks, including Big Ridge State Park, Cove Lake State Park, and Panther Creek State Park. The county also contains part of the Cherokee National Forest.
Economy
The economy of Cocke County is largely based on tourism, with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park being the main attraction. The county is also home to several ski resorts, including Ober Gatlinburg and Cataloochee Ski Area. Other industries in the county include manufacturing, agriculture, and forestry.
Agriculture is an important part of the county's economy, with the main crops being corn, soybeans, hay, and tobacco. Livestock production is also important, with beef cattle, dairy cattle, and hogs being the main animals raised.

As of the 2010 census, the population of Cocke County was 35,662. The racial makeup of the county was 95.3% White, 1.7% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
The median income for a household in the county was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $37,945. The per capita income for the county was $17,845. About 17.2% of families and 22.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.3% of those under age 18 and 17.2% of those age 65 or over.
Education
Cocke County is served by the Cocke County School System, which consists of seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. The county is also home to Walters State Community College, which offers associate degrees and certificate programs.
