Pilot Rock Summary

Pilot Rock is a small city located in Umatilla County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pendleton–Hermiston Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Pilot Rock was founded in 1864 by a group of settlers from the Oregon Trail. The town was named after a nearby rock formation that served as a navigational landmark for pioneers traveling west. The rock formation was used by Native Americans as a lookout point and was also used by the U.S. Army during the Indian Wars.

The first post office in Pilot Rock was established in 1871 The town was incorporated in 1891

Geography

Pilot Rock is located at 45°37′17″N 118°54′45″W (45.6214, -118.9125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Pilot Rock's economy is largely based on agriculture and timber. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a lumber yard.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,039.2 people per square mile (788.3/km2). There were 776 housing units at an average density of 860.2 per square mile (332.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 0.2% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
