Ione Summary

Ione is a small city located in the northeastern corner of Oregon, in the United States. It is situated in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, in the Umatilla County. The city is located at the intersection of Oregon Route 207 and Oregon Route 244. Ione is the county seat of Umatilla County and is home to a population of approximately 1,000 people.

History

The area that is now Ione was first settled in the late 1800s by homesteaders. The town was originally known as “Umatilla City” and was established in 1883. The name was changed to Ione in 1887, after the daughter of one of the original settlers. The town was incorporated in 1901.

In the early 1900s, Ione was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a creamery. The town also had a hotel, a bank, a post office, and several stores.

In the 1950s, Ione began to decline as the agricultural industry shifted away from the area. The town’s population decreased and many of the businesses closed. In the late 1970s, the town began to experience a resurgence as people began to move back to the area.

Geography

Ione is located in the northeastern corner of Oregon, in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. The city is situated at the intersection of Oregon Route 207 and Oregon Route 244. The city is located at an elevation of 2,845 feet above sea level.

The city is surrounded by rolling hills and is located in a semi-arid climate. The average annual temperature is around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The area receives an average of 12 inches of precipitation per year.
