Heppner Summary

Heppner is a city located in Morrow County, Oregon, United States. It is the county seat of Morrow County and is located in the northeastern part of the state. The population was 1,291 at the 2010 census.

History

Heppner was founded in 1873 by a group of settlers led by William T. Heppner, who named the town after himself. The town was incorporated in 1887.
Heppner was the site of a major flood in 1903, which killed over 200 people and destroyed much of the town. The flood was caused by a dam failure upstream on the Willow Creek. The town was rebuilt after the flood and has since become a major agricultural center in the region.

Geography

Heppner is located at 45°25′17″N 119°37′17″W (45.4214, -119.6214). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Heppner is a major agricultural center in the region, with wheat, hay, and other crops being grown in the area. The town is also home to several businesses, including a lumber mill, a grain elevator, and a feed store.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,291 people, 517 households, and 327 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,072.5 people per square mile (414.7/km2). There were 567 housing units at an average density of 472.5 per square mile (182.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.9% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 517 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
