Douglas County Summary
Douglas County is located in the U.S. state of Oregon. It is the fifth-largest county in the state, covering an area of 5,071 square miles. The county is bordered by Lane County to the north, Coos County to the west, Josephine County to the south, and Jackson County to the east. The county seat is Roseburg, and the largest city is Winston.
History
Douglas County was created in 1852 from the southern portion of Umpqua County. It was named after Stephen A. Douglas, a U.S. Senator from Illinois who was a leader in the effort to pass the Oregon Territory Act of 1848. The county was originally populated by Native American tribes, including the Umpqua, Takelma, and Kalapuya.
The first non-native settlers arrived in the area in the early 1850s, and the county was officially organized in 1854. The county was primarily agricultural, with the main crops being wheat, oats, and hay. The timber industry also began to develop in the late 19th century, and the county became a major producer of lumber.
In the early 20th century, the county experienced a population boom due to the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad. The railroad connected the county to the rest of the state, and it also brought in new industries, such as logging and mining.
