History

Shrewsbury was founded in 1837 by William and Mary Shrewsbury. The city was originally known as Shrewsburyville, but the name was changed to Shrewsbury in 1876. The city was incorporated in 1892.
Shrewsbury was a farming community until the 1950s, when it began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to St. Louis. The city has since become a popular suburb of St. Louis, with many residents commuting to the city for work.

Shrewsbury is located at 38°35′17″N 90°22′45″W (38.588133, -90.379167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.17 square miles (10.78 km2), all land.

The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
