Richmond Heights is a city located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 8,603 at the 2010 census. It is an inner-ring suburb of St. Louis, located approximately 6 miles (10 km) west of the city.

History

Richmond Heights was first settled in the late 1800s by German immigrants. The city was incorporated in 1913 and was named after the Richmond Heights subdivision, which was developed by the Richmond Heights Land Company. The city was originally a farming community, but it began to develop into a residential suburb of St. Louis in the 1950s.

Geography

Richmond Heights is located at 38°37′17″N 90°22′17″W (38.621445, -90.371445). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.45 square miles (6.34 km2), all land.

Economy

Richmond Heights is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to the St. Louis Galleria, a large shopping mall. The city is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including Express Scripts, a pharmacy benefit management company, and Centene Corporation, a health care services company.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,603 people, 3,845 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,521.2 people per square mile (1,364.2/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 1,669.2 per square mile (644.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 24.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.3% were non-families. 37.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $58,958. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $32,958 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
