Pleasant Valley Summary
Pleasant Valley is a small city located in Clay County, Missouri, United States. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area and is located just south of the Missouri River. The population was 4,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Pleasant Valley was founded in 1858 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was originally known as "Pleasant Valley Station" and was a stop on the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad. The town was officially incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Pleasant Valley was a popular destination for wealthy Kansas City residents who wanted to escape the city and enjoy the rural atmosphere. The town was known for its large Victorian homes and its many churches.
Geography
Pleasant Valley is located at 39°14'45" North, 94°30'45" West (39.245833, -94.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Pleasant Valley is a small, rural community with a primarily agricultural economy. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The town also has a few light industrial businesses, including a plastics factory and a printing company.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,845 people, 1,845 households, and 1,323 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,179.2 people per square mile (841.3/km2). There were 1,945 housing units at an average density of 867.2 per square mile (334.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $48,958. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
