Ridgefield Summary
Ridgefield, Washington is a small city located in Clark County, Washington, United States. It is situated along the Columbia River, just north of Vancouver, Washington. The city has a population of 6,719 as of the 2010 census.
History
Ridgefield was first settled in 1845 by the Hudson's Bay Company. The area was originally known as Union Ridge, and was part of the Oregon Territory. In 1849, the area was renamed Ridgefield after the nearby ridge. The city was officially incorporated in 1909.
Geography
Ridgefield is located at 45°48'25"N 122°38'45"W (45.806944, -122.645833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Ridgefield's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several wineries, as well as a number of small businesses. The city is also home to the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, which attracts visitors from all over the world.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 6,719 people, 2,541 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,564.2 people per square mile (604.7/km2). There were 2,717 housing units at an average density of 631.2 per square mile (243.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 0.7% African American, 1.2% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 6.2% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $56,917. Males had a median income of $41,919 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
