Pacific Summary

Pacific, Washington is a city located in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 6,606 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Puget Sound region of the Pacific Northwest.

History

The area that is now Pacific was first settled in the late 1800s by homesteaders. The town was officially incorporated in 1909. The city was named after the nearby Pacific Ocean.
In the early 1900s, the city was a major hub for the logging industry. The city was also home to a large number of sawmills and other wood-related industries.

Geography

Pacific is located at 47°14′N 122°20′W (47.23, -122.33). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which, 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

The economy of Pacific is largely based on the service industry. The city is home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a paper mill and a wood products plant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 6,606 people, 2,541 households, and 1,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,611.2 people per square mile (619.7/km2). There were 2,717 housing units at an average density of 663.3 per square mile (255.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.9% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 10.2% from other races, and 4.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 18.2% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $51,944. Males had a median income of $41,919 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945.
