Gray County Summary
Gray County is located in the southwestern corner of Kansas, and is bordered by Ford County to the north, Meade County to the east, Seward County to the south, and Haskell County to the west. The county seat is Cimarron, and the largest city is Montezuma. As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,006.
History
Gray County was established in 1886 and named for Alfred Gray, a Civil War veteran and former Kansas state senator. The county was originally part of Ford County, but was split off in 1886. The first settlers arrived in the area in 1885, and the county was officially organized in 1886.
The first county seat was Ingalls, but it was moved to Cimarron in 1888. The county was largely agricultural, with wheat, corn, and sorghum being the main crops. The Santa Fe Railroad was built through the county in 1887, and the town of Montezuma was founded in 1888.
Geography
Gray County is located in the southwestern corner of Kansas, and is bordered by Ford County to the north, Meade County to the east, Seward County to the south, and Haskell County to the west. The county has a total area of 890 square miles, of which 889 square miles is land and 1.2 square miles (0.1%) is water.
The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the western part of the county. The Arkansas River flows through the county, and there are several small lakes and reservoirs in the area. The county is mostly covered in grassland, with some areas of cropland.
Economy
The economy of Gray County is largely based on agriculture. The main crops are wheat, corn, and sorghum. Cattle and sheep are also raised in the area.
The county is also home to several oil and gas fields, and there are several wind farms in the area. The county is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a plastics plant and a food processing plant.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 6,006 people, 2,323 households, and 1,619 families living in the county. The population density was 6.7 people per square mile. There were 2,717 housing units at an average density of 3.0 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the county was 95.2% White, 0.3% Black or African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
There were 2,323 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the county, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $43,929. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $20,917 for females. The per capita income for the county was $17,845. About 9.7% of families and 12.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.2% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
