Geography

Geary County is located in the Flint Hills region of Kansas, and is bordered by Riley County to the north, Wabaunsee County to the east, Morris County to the south, and Pottawatomie County to the west. The county covers an area of 576 square miles, of which 575 square miles is land and 1 square mile is water. The county is drained by the Smoky Hill River, which flows through the county from north to south. The county is also home to several small lakes, including Milford Lake, which is the largest lake in the state of Kansas.
The terrain of Geary County is mostly rolling hills, with some flat areas in the northern and western parts of the county. The highest point in the county is located in the northern part of the county, at an elevation of 1,717 feet. The county is mostly covered in grassland, with some areas of woodland in the northern and western parts of the county.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 34,362 people, 12,945 households, and 8,945 families residing in the county. The population density was 59.7 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 87.2% White, 5.7% Black or African American, 0.7% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. 6.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The median income for a household in the county was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. The per capita income for the county was $21,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.

Economy
