Sorrento Summary
Sorrento is a small town located in Lake County, Florida, United States. It is situated on the western shore of Lake Apopka, about 25 miles northwest of Orlando. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Sorrento was first settled in the late 1800s by settlers from the nearby town of Eustis. The town was named after the Italian city of Sorrento, which was the hometown of one of the settlers. The town was incorporated in 1925 and has remained a small, rural community ever since.
Geography
Sorrento is located at 28°48'N 81°41'W (28.80, -81.68). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.
Economy
Sorrento is a small, rural community with a limited economy. The town is home to several small businesses, including a few restaurants, a gas station, and a few convenience stores. The town also has a few small manufacturing companies, such as a woodworking shop and a metal fabrication shop.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,420.3 people per square mile (548.3/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 572.3 per square mile (221.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 94.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
