Sawgrass Summary

Sawgrass is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area, which was home to an estimated 6,012,331 people in 2015.

History

Sawgrass was originally part of the Everglades, and was first settled in the late 19th century by settlers from the Bahamas. The area was known as “The Glades” and was used for farming and ranching. In the 1950s, the area was developed into a residential community. The name “Sawgrass” was chosen in reference to the sawgrass marshes that are common in the area.

Geography

Sawgrass is located at 26°14'17" North, 80°17'45" West (26.238, -80.296). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), of which 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Sawgrass is home to several businesses, including Sawgrass Mills, a large outlet mall, and the BB&T Center, an arena and concert venue. The Sawgrass Technology Park is also located in the area, and is home to several technology companies.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,890 people, 3,845 households, and 2,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,093.3 people per square mile (808.2/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 962.3/sq mi (371.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 16.2% of the population.
There were 3,845 households out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.83.
In the CDP, the population was spread out with 21.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
