Pasadena Hills Summary
Pasadena Hills is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St. Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
The area now known as Pasadena Hills was originally inhabited by the Tocobaga people, a Native American tribe that lived in the Tampa Bay area. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 19th century, and the area was incorporated as a town in 1925. The town was named after Pasadena, California, and was originally intended to be a resort community. However, the Great Depression caused the town to struggle financially, and it was eventually annexed by the city of Tampa in 1957.
Geography
Pasadena Hills is located at 27°54'45" North, 82°27'45" West (27.912500, -82.462500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Pasadena Hills is largely based on the service industry. The area is home to a variety of restaurants, retail stores, and other businesses. The University of South Florida is located nearby, and many of the area's residents are employed by the university or by businesses that serve the university.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,945 people, 3,717 households, and 2,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,133.3 people per square mile (822.7/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 930.2/sq mi (358.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $51,945. Males had a median income of $36,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
