Lakeland Highlands Summary

Lakeland Highlands is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lakeland–Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Lakeland Highlands was first settled in the late 19th century by settlers from the North. The area was originally known as “Highland Park” and was a popular destination for tourists and vacationers. The area was later renamed “Lakeland Highlands” in the early 20th century.
The area was largely rural until the 1950s when the population began to grow rapidly. The area was annexed by the City of Lakeland in 1959 and has since become a popular residential area.

Geography

Lakeland Highlands is located at 28°1′25″N 81°51′17″W (28.023750, -81.854722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), of which 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) (2.37%) is water.

Economy

The economy of Lakeland Highlands is largely based on the service industry. The area is home to a variety of restaurants, retail stores, and other businesses. The area is also home to several medical facilities, including Lakeland Regional Medical Center and Watson Clinic.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,845 people, 3,541 households, and 2,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,093.3 people per square mile (808.2/km2). There were 3,817 housing units at an average density of 890.3/sq mi (344.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $52,813. Males had a median income of $36,919 versus $26,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
