Conway Summary
Conway is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Orange County, Florida. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 11,103 at the 2010 census.
History
Conway was originally part of the Conway Estate, which was established in 1883 by William Conway. The estate was located on the south side of Lake Conway, which was named after William Conway. The estate was used for cattle ranching and citrus farming. In the early 1900s, the estate was divided into smaller parcels and sold to developers.
In the 1950s, the area began to experience rapid growth as Orlando and the surrounding area became a popular destination for tourists. The area was incorporated as a town in 1957 and was named after William Conway.
Geography
Conway is located at 28°30′N 81°20′W (28.50, -81.33). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.
Economy
Conway is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to several industrial parks, which provide employment opportunities for local residents.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 11,103 people, 4,717 households, and 2,945 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,346.2 people per square mile (519.7/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 619.3 per square mile (239.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.2% White, 16.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 6.3% from other races, and 3.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 17.2% of the population.
There were 4,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $48,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
