Cocoa West is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Brevard County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Palm Bay–Melbourne–Titusville Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Cocoa West was 4,845.

Geography

Cocoa West is located at 28°17'25" North, 80°45'17" West (28.290278, -80.754722). It is situated along the Indian River Lagoon, just south of the city of Cocoa. The CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles, of which 4.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles (2.45%) is water.

History

Cocoa West was originally part of the unincorporated area of Cocoa, which was established in 1884. In the early 1900s, the area was known as "West Cocoa" and was home to a number of citrus groves. In the 1950s, the area began to be developed as a residential community. The Cocoa West CDP was established in the 1980s.

Economy

The economy of Cocoa West is largely based on tourism and services. The area is home to a number of hotels, restaurants, and other businesses catering to tourists. The area is also home to a number of light industrial and manufacturing businesses.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 4,845 people, 1,945 households, and 1,323 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,170.2 people per square mile. There were 2,093 housing units at an average density of 509.3 per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 11.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.3% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.2% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 24.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
