Belle Glade is a city located in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. It is the most populous city in the county and is located in the southeastern part of the state. The city is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is located on the southeastern shore of Lake Okeechobee. As of the 2010 census, the population of Belle Glade was 17,667.
History
Belle Glade was founded in the early 1920s by a group of farmers from the Midwest who were looking for a place to grow vegetables. The city was named after the nearby lake, which was named after the French term for “beautiful lake”. The city was incorporated in 1925 and has since grown to become the most populous city in Palm Beach County.
Geography
Belle Glade is located at 26°41'N 80°40'W (26.68, -80.67). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), of which 5.1 square miles (13.2 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.90%) is water.
Economy
Belle Glade’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several large vegetable farms, as well as sugar cane and citrus groves. The city is also home to several food processing plants, including a sugar refinery and a tomato cannery. The city is also home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 17,667 people, 5,845 households, and 4,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,457.2 people per square mile (1,339.2/km2). There were 6,541 housing units at an average density of 1,279.2 per square mile (493.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.2% African American, 37.2% White, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.3% of the population.
There were 5,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.2% were married couples living together, 28.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.50.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 32.2% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $20,945, and the median income for a family was $23,906. Males had a median income of $25,938 versus $17,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $10,945. About 33.2% of families and 37.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 48.2% of those under age 18 and 24.2% of those age 65 or over.
