Bray is a small town located in Stephens County, Oklahoma. It is situated in the foothills of the Arbuckle Mountains, approximately 10 miles south of Duncan. The town was founded in 1892 and named after the first postmaster, William Bray. The population of Bray was estimated to be 545 in 2000.
Geography
Bray is located at 34°37'25" North, 97°51'45" West (34.62361, -97.86250). It is situated in the foothills of the Arbuckle Mountains, approximately 10 miles south of Duncan. The town is located in the Central Great Plains region of Oklahoma. The terrain is mostly flat with some rolling hills. The climate is semi-arid with hot summers and mild winters.
Economy
The economy of Bray is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms and ranches that produce wheat, corn, soybeans, and other crops. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the 2000 census, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in Bray. The population density was 545.0 people per square mile (210.7/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 233.0 per square mile (89.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
