Waucoma Summary
Waucoma is a small city located in Fayette County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Turkey River, approximately 10 miles south of the county seat of West Union. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Waucoma was first settled in 1854 by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally known as "New Berlin" and was later renamed Waucoma, which is derived from the Native American word for "beautiful valley". The town was officially incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Waucoma was a thriving agricultural community, with a variety of businesses and industries. The town was home to a flour mill, a creamery, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, a furniture store, a hotel, and a variety of other businesses.
Geography
Waucoma is located at 42°45'25" North, 91°51'45" West (42.756944, -91.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Waucoma is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a variety of small businesses. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory and a plastics factory.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 213 households, and 145 families residing in the city. The population density was 778.6 people per square mile (301.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 327.1 per square mile (126.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 213 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females.
