Orient Summary
Orient is a small city located in Adair County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Orient was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The town was named after the Orient Mine, which was located nearby. The mine was named after the Orient Express, a famous train that ran from Paris to Istanbul.

Economy
The economy of Orient is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators and a feed mill.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 213 households, and 149 families residing in the city. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 365.2 per square mile (141.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.90% White, 0.18% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.18% Asian, and 0.55% from two or more races.
