Norwalk Summary
Norwalk, Iowa is a city located in Warren County, Iowa, United States. The population was 8,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Norwalk was founded in 1854 by settlers from New England. The town was named after Norwalk, Connecticut, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office in Norwalk was established in 1855.
In 1856, the first school was built in Norwalk. The first church was built in 1858. The first newspaper, the Norwalk Leader, was established in 1872.
Norwalk was incorporated as a city in 1876 The first mayor was elected in 1877
Geography
Norwalk is located at 41°25'25" North, 93°37'45" West (41.423, -93.629). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Norwalk's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large employers, including Norwalk Furniture, Norwalk Manufacturing, and Norwalk Tire.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 8,945 people, 3,541 households, and 2,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,092.2 people per square mile (421.9/km2). There were 3,788 housing units at an average density of 462.2 per square mile (178.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
