History
Keosauqua was founded in 1839 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Native American word for "beautiful view," and was the first county seat of Van Buren County. The town was incorporated in 1847.
In the late 19th century, Keosauqua was a popular tourist destination, with many visitors coming to take advantage of the town's natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a woolen mill, and a brickyard.

Keosauqua is located at 40°45'17" North, 91°59'45" West (40.754722, -91.995833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of it land.

The town is home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a variety of restaurants. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
