History
The area that is now Ely was first settled in 1845 by a group of settlers from New York. The settlement was originally known as “Ely’s Grove”, named after the first settler, John Ely. The settlement was incorporated as a city in 1876.

The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
