Central City Summary
Central City is a small city located in Linn County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Cedar River, approximately 20 miles north of Cedar Rapids. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Central City was founded in 1855 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The city was originally named “Centerville”, but the name was changed to Central City in 1857. The city was incorporated in 1872.
Central City was a major stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, which ran through the city from 1866 to 1970. The railroad was a major factor in the city’s growth and development.
Geography
Central City is located at 42°14′N 91°37′W (42.23, -91.62). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Central City’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural businesses, including a grain elevator, a feed mill, and a dairy. The city also has several manufacturing businesses, including a furniture factory, a plastics factory, and a metal fabrication plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 672.5 per square mile (259.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
