Jackson County Summary
Jackson County is located in the southeastern corner of Iowa, and is bordered by Jones County to the north, Clinton County to the east, Cedar County to the south, and Dubuque County to the west. The county seat is Maquoketa, and the county is named after Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States.
History
Jackson County was established in 1837, and was originally part of Dubuque County. The county was named after Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States. The first settlers arrived in the area in 1835, and the county was officially organized in 1837. The first county seat was located in Andrew, but it was moved to Maquoketa in 1841.
The first railroad in the county was built in 1855, and it connected Maquoketa to Dubuque. This railroad was later extended to Clinton and Davenport. The county was also home to several coal mines, which were opened in the late 1800s.
