Ida County is located in the northwest corner of Iowa, and is bordered by Lyon, Osceola, Clay, Dickinson, and Buena Vista counties. It is part of the Sioux City, IA-NE-SD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Ida Grove, and the largest city is Holstein. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,089.
History
Ida County was established in 1851 and was named after Ida Grove, the county seat. The county was originally part of Woodbury County, but was split off in 1851. The first settlers arrived in the area in 1856, and the county was officially organized in 1858.
The county was home to several Native American tribes, including the Omaha, Oto, and Iowa. The first white settlers were mostly of German and Scandinavian descent.
Geography
Ida County covers an area of 576 square miles, making it the fourth-smallest county in Iowa. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern part of the county. The county is drained by the West Fork of the Little Sioux River and its tributaries.
