Blakesburg Summary

Blakesburg is a small town located in Wapello County, Iowa, United States. The population was estimated to be around 200 people in 2020. The town is located on the Des Moines River, and is part of the Ottumwa, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Blakesburg was founded in 1854 by William Blake, a settler from Ohio. The town was originally named Blakesburgh, but the name was changed to Blakesburg in 1856. The town was incorporated in 1858.
In the late 19th century, Blakesburg was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a sawmill. The town also had a post office, a school, and a church.
In the early 20th century, the town began to decline. The population decreased, and many of the businesses closed. The post office closed in 1933, and the school closed in 1940.
