Virgin Summary

Virgin, Utah is a small town located in the southwestern corner of the state, approximately 15 miles northeast of St. George. It is part of Washington County and is situated in the Virgin River Valley. The town was founded in 1858 by Mormon pioneers and is named after the Virgin River, which flows through the area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Virgin was 1,062.

Geography

Virgin is located at 37°10'17" North, 113°25'17" West (37.1714, -113.4214). It is situated in the Virgin River Valley, at an elevation of 2,890 feet (880 m). The town is surrounded by the Pine Valley Mountains to the east, the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve to the west, and the Virgin River to the south.

Climate

Virgin has a semi-arid climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The average high temperature in July is 97°F (36°C), and the average low temperature in January is 33°F (1°C). The average annual precipitation is 8.5 inches (216 mm).

Economy

The economy of Virgin is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms and ranches, which produce hay, alfalfa, and other crops. Tourism is also an important part of the local economy, as the town is located near several popular outdoor recreation areas, including Zion National Park, Snow Canyon State Park, and the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,062 people, 393 households, and 287 families residing in Virgin. The population density was 545.3 people per square mile (210.9/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 94.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.2% of the population.
