Stansbury Park Summary

Stansbury Park is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Tooele County, Utah, United States. The population was 8,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all land.

History

Stansbury Park was first settled in 1848 by a group of Mormon pioneers led by Captain Howard Stansbury. The area was originally known as Stansbury's Settlement, and was later renamed Stansbury Park in honor of the original settler.
The area was largely agricultural until the 1950s, when the population began to grow rapidly due to the construction of the nearby Deseret Chemical Depot. The depot was used to store chemical weapons, and the population of Stansbury Park grew to over 10,000 by the 1970s.
In the 1980s, the depot was closed and the population began to decline. The population has since stabilized, and the area is now a popular bedroom community for Salt Lake City.

Economy

Stansbury Park is largely a bedroom community for Salt Lake City, with many residents commuting to the city for work. The area is also home to several small businesses, including a number of retail stores, restaurants, and service providers.
The area is also home to the Deseret Chemical Depot, which is now used for storage and disposal of hazardous materials.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,835 people, 2,845 households, and 2,521 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,062.3 people per square mile (409.7/km2). There were 3,039 housing units at an average density of 365.7/sq mi (141.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 51.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 15.7% were non-families. 12.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 3.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.10 and the average family size was 3.39.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 34.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 5.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 101.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $63,917, and the median income for a family was $66,917. Males had a median income of $45,917 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,917. About 2.7% of families and 3.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
