Ossun Summary

Ossun is a small unincorporated community located in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana. It is situated on the banks of the Vermilion River, approximately 10 miles south of Lafayette. The population of Ossun was estimated to be 1,845 in the year 2000.

History

Ossun was founded in the late 1800s by French-speaking settlers from the nearby town of Carencro. The town was named after the Ossun family, who were among the first settlers. The town was originally a farming community, with the main crops being cotton, corn, and sugar cane. In the early 1900s, the town began to grow as more settlers moved in and businesses began to open. The first school in Ossun was established in 1910, and the first church was built in 1912.
In the 1920s, the town began to experience a period of growth and prosperity. The population increased, and new businesses opened, including a bank, a grocery store, and a movie theater. The town also had a post office, a library, and a fire station.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as many of the businesses closed and the population decreased. The decline continued into the 1970s, when the town was almost abandoned. In the 1980s, the town began to experience a revival as new businesses opened and the population began to increase.

Geography

Ossun is located in the southwestern part of Lafayette Parish, approximately 10 miles south of Lafayette. The town is situated on the banks of the Vermilion River, which flows through the area. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters.

Economy
