History
Coushatta was founded in 1839 by a group of settlers from the Coushatta tribe of Native Americans. The town was named after the tribe, which had been living in the area for centuries. The town was incorporated in 1845 and became the parish seat of Red River Parish in 1846.

There were 745 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
