Orleans Parish Summary
Orleans Parish is a county located in the state of Louisiana, United States. It is the most populous parish in the state, with a population of 343,829 as of the 2010 census. The parish seat is New Orleans, the largest city in the state. Orleans Parish is located in the southeastern corner of the state, along the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain. It is bordered by St. Tammany Parish to the north, St. Bernard Parish to the east, Plaquemines Parish to the south, and Jefferson Parish to the west.
Geography
Orleans Parish covers an area of 574 square miles, making it the largest parish in Louisiana. It is located in the southeastern corner of the state, along the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain. The terrain is mostly flat, with some low hills in the northern part of the parish. The highest point in the parish is an unnamed hill in the northern part of the parish, which has an elevation of about 20 feet. The parish is drained by the Mississippi River and its tributaries, including the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal, the Industrial Canal, and the 17th Street Canal.
Climate
Orleans Parish has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 64°F, with an average high of 81°F in July and an average low of 46°F in January. The average annual precipitation is 62.5 inches, with an average of 5.5 inches of snow per year.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 343,829 people, 137,924 households, and 79,845 families residing in the parish. The population density was 599.3 people per square mile. There were 154,717 housing units at an average density of 268.7 per square mile. The racial makeup of the parish was 60.2% White, 33.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.7% of the population.
Economy
Orleans Parish is the economic center of Louisiana, with a diverse economy that includes tourism, manufacturing, shipping, and finance. The port of New Orleans is the largest port in the state, and the second largest port on the Gulf of Mexico. The port handles over 200 million tons of cargo each year, and is a major hub for the import and export of goods.
