Caddo Parish Summary

Caddo Parish is located in the northwestern corner of Louisiana and is the third most populous parish in the state. It is bordered by Bossier Parish to the north, DeSoto Parish to the east, Red River Parish to the south, and Texas to the west. The parish seat is Shreveport, the third largest city in Louisiana.

History

Caddo Parish was established in 1838 and named after the Caddo Indians who lived in the area. The Caddo Indians were a Native American tribe that lived in the area for centuries before the arrival of Europeans. The Caddo were a peaceful people who lived in villages along the Red River and traded with other tribes and Europeans.
In the early 19th century, the area was part of the Spanish Empire and was later ceded to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The area was then part of the Territory of Orleans until 1812 when it became part of the newly created Territory of Arkansas. In 1819, the area was divided into the counties of Claiborne, Natchitoches, and Caddo.
In 1845, Caddo Parish was officially established and Shreveport was chosen as the parish seat. The city was named after Captain Henry Miller Shreve, who cleared the Red River of log jams in the early 19th century.
In the late 19th century, Caddo Parish was a major center of cotton production and the parish seat of Shreveport became a major port for the shipment of cotton. The city also became a major railroad hub and was home to several large industries, including the American Cotton Oil Company and the Shreveport Times newspaper.
In the early 20th century, Caddo Parish was a major center of oil production and the city of Shreveport became a major center of the oil industry. The parish also became a major center of the entertainment industry, with the opening of the Louisiana Hayride radio show in 1948.

Geography

Caddo Parish covers an area of 1,093 square miles and is located in the northwestern corner of Louisiana. The parish is bordered by Bossier Parish to the north, DeSoto Parish to the east, Red River Parish to the south, and Texas to the west. The Red River forms the western boundary of the parish.
The parish is mostly flat with some rolling hills in the northern and eastern parts. The highest point in the parish is located in the northern part of the parish and is approximately 300 feet above sea level. The parish is drained by the Red River and its tributaries, including the Little River, the Cypress Bayou, and the Caddo Lake.

Economy

Caddo Parish has a diverse economy with a mix of industries, including manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and education. The largest employers in the parish are the Shreveport-Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area, Barksdale Air Force Base, and the Shreveport-Bossier City Port.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
