History

Ascension Parish was established in 1807, making it one of the oldest parishes in the state. It was named after the Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church, which was founded in Donaldsonville in 1803. The parish was originally part of the German Coast, an area along the Mississippi River that was settled by German immigrants in the early 19th century.
