Belcher Summary

Belcher is a small town located in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. It is situated on the banks of the Red River, approximately 10 miles south of Shreveport. The town has a population of approximately 500 people and is part of the Shreveport-Bossier City metropolitan area.

History

Belcher was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from Arkansas. The town was named after a local landowner, William Belcher. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon developed into a small trading center. The town was incorporated in 1891 and the first mayor was elected in 1892.
In the early 1900s, Belcher was a thriving community with a population of over 1,000 people. The town had several stores, a bank, a hotel, a post office, and a cotton gin. The town also had a school, a church, and a newspaper.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline due to the Great Depression. Many of the businesses closed and the population decreased. The town was further impacted by the Great Flood of 1927, which caused extensive damage to the area.
In the 1940s, the town began to recover and the population increased. The town was also impacted by the oil boom of the 1950s and 1960s. This led to an increase in population and the development of new businesses.
