Shinnston is a city located in Harrison County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 2,201 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harrison County.

History

Shinnston was founded in 1787 by John Shinn, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was originally known as Shinn's Town, but the name was changed to Shinnston in 1814. The town was incorporated in 1832.
Shinnston was an important stop on the Northwestern Turnpike, which connected the Ohio River to the Potomac River. The turnpike was completed in 1837 and was the first major highway in the area.
During the Civil War, Shinnston was the site of a major battle in 1861. The Battle of Shinnston was fought between Union and Confederate forces and resulted in a Confederate victory.
